Of course I cannot fully enter into the heart-break of God or the grief of the Holy Spirit. But I can understand that God’s holiness demanded that He abandon Jesus. I can understand that the Holy Spirit’s purity forced Him to withdraw from Jesus.
This is where my understanding fails and I am wordless with grief-filled wonder before the Triune God. God the Son was totally God. He was equally as holy as the Father and equally as pure as the Holy Spirit.
He is is the very same God (Psalms 7:11) Who was angry with the wicked every day.
He is the very same God (Hebrews 10:31) into Whose hands it is a fearful thing to fall.
He is the very same God (Hebrews 12:29) Who is a consuming fire.
I can get a firm picture of that in my mind and I tremble before the blinding holiness of Righteous Justice. Then I go to Calvary and reason falters and fails.
These days the word awesome is used so widely and so foolishly it has lost all of its original meaning.
Let’s look at something so truly awesome that it stretches our minds to the breaking point and our hearts have to take over.
GOD (2 Corinthians 5:21) MADE HIM SIN
Before the foundation of the world the Triune God made the plan for our salvation, as outlined in the above Scripture. God Almighty the Son, Who would become the MAN Christ Jesus in the far-distant future, had to be God to plan what He did and had to be .
MAN to do what He did. All through His earthly life (2 Corinthians 5:19) God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself by the revelation of God through Christ.
How could it be – how could it possibly be the Almighty – the holiest of all – the purest of all – would willingly, deliberately lay aside all His transcendent glory (Philippians 2:6-7) in order to clothe Himself with a human body? Not only how but why, oh why? The Purest of all became sin! No wonder He said in Gethsemane that (Matthew 26:38) His sorrow was almost killing Him.
(Heavenly Father, let the answer permeate my soul as never before).
We could all ask why because we know we are not worth it. Precious Jesus, You did it to prevent us from the fearful falling and to save us from consuming fire and to shield us from holy anger. US – the very ones, the wicked ones who were the cause of that anger. My mind is straining but I have to dig deeper into these words
– this revolutionary truth –
GOD – my SAVIOUR
Before such wonder and such mystery where is AWE, where is reverential fear and overwhelming gratitude?
The Scripture reveals something miraculous given to us in (2 Corinthians 5:19-20) the ministry of reconciliation. Through our lives the indwelling Lord Jesus wants to reconcile our world to Him by the revelation of Himself through us by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus died with a broken heart and yet the Church in the free world sleeps while the Persecuted Church burns!
Jesus died for those wicked ones who are right now persecuting believers. He also died to redeem those of us who are right now choosing to sleep.
Why? Oh, Why?
