It was as if I could see them standing there, the three of them, and they looked radiant. I thought I should go over and express my sympathy for all that they had endured. I tried to imagine the horror of their demon-driven enemies, the suffocating smoke, the bone-melting heat, the searing flames and haltingly I endeavoured to speak of it.
Luke 23:34 -- "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do."
Like you, I've read this verse many times. Always I'm impressed by the selfless beauty of Jesus in being willing to forgive His vicious persecutors. But this time I was struck by the pain as I realized, more deeply, that there can never be true forgiveness without pain.
Sometimes my mind feels like a bowl which is so full that it is going to overflow. I don’t want to lose any of the nuggets so I’d like to share some of my manna with you. God the Holy Spirit is such a wonderful, loving, patient Teacher and Guide as He unfolds the sacred wonders of the holy Scriptures and takes us deeper into unsuspected treasures even in familiar verses.
What does it do to a missionary who is already in adverse circumstances, in enemy territory, cut off from family and friends, subject to danger, disease and discouragement, to be told that their living allowance is being cut?
